7:27p Sooner or later, it was bound to happen
Sooner or later, it was bound to happen. On the way back in from the ride today in Lexington, I had a run-in with a car. It was the intersection of 4/225 and Mass Ave (right by Wilson Farms). The driver of a large pickup truck was pulling out to make a left turn and we were moving along Mass Ave. There were six of us, all in bright green and blue. He stopped and then started to pull out again and then stopped again. I wasn’t sure if he was going to keep going at that point or stop. Scott managed to get around the front, but I basically aimed for the softest landing I could.
That landing, as it turned out, was slowing a lot, hitting the front wheel against the front corner panel/bumper and then somehow bouncing back off the hood (I somewhat remember my hands pushing off the hood) and landing on my feet. Unfortunately, in the process, I managed to chip two of my front teeth.
911 was called and Lexington’s emergency services were very quick to arrive with a fire truck, a paramedic, an ambulance, and a police officer. After landing on my feet, I stayed on the ground for a minute or two to make sure all was okay and then moved to the curb. As the paramedics came over, I was pretty sure I was okay and eventually just did the “refused service” with the ambulance. They looked and didn’t see any protrusion or obvious things other than the chipped teeth.
The officer was very nice and took my information. Apparently he’s citing the driver. I have all of the driver’s information and plan to follow up with his insurance before long.
The bike was ridable for the 2 miles to the shop, but the frame is shot — there’s a huge bend in the top tube and in addition, the rear shifter is destroyed. Pictures in the future. As far as the truck — not sure if there was any damage; I kind of doubt it.
All in all, it could have been a lot worse. At this point, the worst pain is that my teeth are a bit sensitive and eating promises to be exciting as I can’t really use my front teeth. I’ve got a small scrape below my right knee and a little bit of soreness in my left knee and my right elbow, but I’ve already started the ibuprofin for those. And I’ve spoken with a dentist and he said it sounds like nothing that needs immediate attention, so I’m to call him first thing Monday morning.
The driver’s insurance should, especially given the citation, cover the dental work as well as the bike work and hopefully without a fight, but I’ve already put in the first contact to a local lawyer who specializes in bike accidents. Good guy and former president of MassBike and also previously helped Kate in an accident.
Witnesses included Scott, Jen, Barb, Brian and Suraffel.
And now, I’m starving, so I’m going to go find some food to cut up into tiny pieces and chew in the back of my mouth. I’m intending to go out tomorrow on the Merlin to unwind a bit and still am planning on doing Seacoast Safari next weekend. And I’m still looking for people to support me on that ride. Hopefully by then with intact teeth!

9:46a One year later.....
Okay we all know about GKH's now infamous Google Tech Talk from June 2008: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2SED6sewRw
While for me the best part of the talk is the discussion about testing and regression tracking (14:15 in the talk). That's just one sidebar discussion generated by an audience question...it wasn't the main thrust of the talk. The point was to poke Google in the eye about increasing Google's contribution to the kernel project. I think a lot of people missed the point. Did Google?
Okay so it's been a year, is Google now a better contributor? It's been an interesting year with Android (30:00)...patches are flowing into staging from that effort. Outside of Android specific patches is Google doing better? More spelling fixes maybe (48:20)? If GKH was giving a Google tech talk today, would the talk be materially different? Is Google in the top ten corporate contributors over the last year?

12:44p Launchpad opening...delayed.
https://lists.launchpad.net/launchpad-users/msg05078.html
Now I can't fault the reasoning for the delay. They want to make use of the new bzr backend as it has significant speedups. I certaintly can't say a speed up to bzr wouldn't be beneficial. If Canonical wants to say publicly that bzr isn't up to the task managing Launchpad releases..who am I to disagree with that assessment.
But I find it a bit ironic, that development in the underlying dvcs that Canonical is funding the development of is holding up the release of the code hosting web services codebase that Canonical is funding the development of. Oh sweet irony.
Here's how I would have written the same message:
"I'm sorry, we'd love to release this code to you on the date we promised, but you see, we just aren't that thrilled with usability of the dvcs we've chosen to use internally and have been using internally for years and years now. We took a show of hands and yep, we all pretty much agree that the implementation we've been using for years blows monkey chunks and we don't want to inflict that experience on any external contributors. We've only been using it because we are paid to use it..we've had no choice in the matter. To be honest with you, we aren't even sure why anyone who wasn't forced to use it by their employer was using this implementation for any serious collaborative project. It's sooooo painful to use.
So until the dvcs implementation gets better we're just not going to bother releasing the launchpad code. We think that this codebase is so very different compared to the thousands of other codebases already using the same dvcs that it just would not be worth trying. We think that its size and complexity of the launchpad code far surpasses the capabilities of the current dvcs implementation. Yes, the very same dvcs that we have repeatedly encouraged and forced thoursands of other codebases(like mysql and zope) to use to gain access the very same Launchpad infrastructure we are now withholding from the community. Don't fret however, as we've been working on upgrading the capabilities of the dcvs since last November, and the new capabilities should be reliable enough for us to make use of 'real-soon-now'(tm)...hopefully. Thank you, THE MANagement"

3:33p Impending Doom!
So it's the eve of a big event....the first ever "Take the kids to AL...and leave them!" Grandma and Granddaddy have requested them, so no fear, they didn't pass some threshold of intransigience. Of course, you've heard of seperation anxiety? I already have it. Rachel is going to wander into the road and get hit. They will be drawn to the lake like moths to a flame and drown. Never mind that I survived my childhood living next to a busy highway just fine, parental paranoia has no limits. Why yes, I did at one point wonder if I should keep inflated water wings in my car in case I like, ever fell off a bridge or something. I still prefer to fuel up the wheels without the kids in the car in case of spontaneous combustion. I'm sure *they* will be fine. They'll have a play fort, big backyard, and I hear Grandma even got one of those fancy water play forts too. I'm guessing they won't want to come home, but I'm also guessing that after a few days, I will be quite ready to trade in sleeping in a bit back for my sweet hugs and kisses. We leave tomorrow to take them away. *twitches in pre-withdrawl* Ryan is taking his tooth pillow because the dentist told him the one next to the goner is loose too, and my helpful young man is recommending to Rachel taht she take hers too, "just in case."
So, Colorado...I'm ( eking it out. )

TechHeads! Is there a desktop widget/app for the Mac that will stream RSS feeds in realtime? (Kinda like what TweetDeck is to Twitter)
